All We Imagine As Light (15)

  • Stirchley Baths 2-4 Bournville Lane Birmingham, England, B30 2JT United Kingdom (map)
You have to believe the illusion, or else you’ll go mad

We are delighted to bring you March's Friday Feature - Payal Kapadia's sublime ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT, winner of the 2024 Cannes Grand Prix prize.

Three women living in Mumbai find a common bond in their daily struggles in this quiet, moving Hindi-language drama, exploring themes of faith, class, identity, and loneliness.

"It’s a marvel of a movie, with something of the humanist poetry of Satyajit Ray or Edward Yang. And it’s all the more remarkable given that this is Kapadia’s first fiction feature (her 2021 debut film, the documentary A Night of Knowing Nothing, also picked up a prize in Cannes). What a talent."

-Wendy Ide, The Guardian

PRE-FILM SHORT:

Before the film we’ll be screening A Glass House, a short film from local filmmaker Charles Strider.

Robin, heartbroken and tending her garden, is confronted by an unexpected visitor whose presence threatens to unearth the past.

Shot just down the road in Kings Norton, Charles describes A Glass House as “a deeply personal film born from a challenging period in my life. Conceived and written while I was homeless, this film is an intimate exploration of grief, cultural identity, and the struggle to find our voices. It's been an incredible journey to see it come to life after years of hard work..

We love it and we think you will too. The film will start at 7pm, with a short intro from the filmmaking team, followed by our main feature.
